Background
Born in Basel, Switzerland in 1967 to Swiss/English parents,
my artwork has its roots in my artistic family background and was then shaped by my art and dance studies in Switzerland, London and Java.
In my drawings and paintings there are traces to be seen of this complex mixed heritage.
I have worked as a freelance Artist/Illustrator since 1991 and have had a number of books published. For the illustrations in "Schabernack", Peter Hammer Verlag, I received the prestigious Troisdorf award for book illustration.
I have been living in Totnes for 14 years and have been exhibiting on a regular basis either as part of open studios or at Birdwood House, Totnes.
About my work
At the centre of my work is the expression of a world peopled with strange creatures who are mostly friendly, amusing and occasionally disturbing but all are decidedly peculiar in the most intriguing of all worlds.
I am interested in depicting situations that are ambivalent - things/people/animals don't always turn out to be what we think they are. By playing with the different qualities and characters of humans and animals alike, visual stories of their relationships or surprising situations arise.
In our rapidly changing world some of us like to be reminded of what it feels like to be wild, in nature, amongst beasts, to become beasts ourselves. There is a growing need to stay in touch with what is wild, authentic, ancient and natural.
