Watercolour by Andrew Lucas
Toward the Light, Krasnodar
Andrew Lucas
I was born and grew up in Salisbury and throughout my childhood, I was fortunate enough to have been surrounded by medieval architecture, Salisbury Cathedral and the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.
I spent many hours through childhood drawing the many buildings that were all around, my love of the countryside and the river would also feature many times in my drawings. In my teens, I began to paint in watercolour, utilising the many qualities through time and application.
Over time, I built up my portfolio until I was ready to hold my first solo exhibition in Salisbury, which was also my first public show. The years that followed allowed me to continue to exhibit both solo and collective exhibitions local to South Devon. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to hold my first solo international exhibition which was great to share my work with the international audience. I was also invited to hold a 12-week solo show by Salisbury museum, which after all of these years was great to return to where my artistic story began.
Watercolour is still my chosen medium, for me the results achieved can far outweigh the difficulties that may occur. With its expressive, bold yet subtle manner, I find that any subject can be captured, and offers its own unique expression. My passion for drawing is also still evident and evolves together with my paintings.
Working from my studio here in Torquay, my portfolio continues to grow. I endeavour to continue to share my work not only with audiences local to Torbay, but also on national and international stages too. Through my work I hope to evoke real emotion, and to allow the audience to see a different side to familiar scenes through my interpretation.
