Torsion

The stone I choose has a sense of deep history, illustrated by fossils within it from another time and life.

 

When I began this work, I carved in a mostly naturalistic way, following the colour and patina within the stone, learning my way into it. These concerns are still important; however, my interest now is in geometric forms, perhaps due in part to my scientific background.

 

I like the idea of a piece of sculpture being something to be explored, the forms being both tactile and visually interesting, so I include a quiet randomness to the work, there to be found by the viewer.

 

Wildlife conservation is important to me, and we live high on Dartmoor, surrounded by abundant and largely unspoilt flora and fauna. I am a member of Butterfly Conservation, and the exquisite detail of a butterfly egg is referenced in one of my pieces.
