The Dream
Liz Watts ASWA
I am a sculptor and ceramicist working in ceramic, papier-mâché and bronze. I have a particular passion for porcelain, loving the canvas it creates onto which colour can be applied generously.
I often create designs which I carve into rolling pins to create relief patterns and then forms shapes freely with the rolled clay. These are then freehand painted with underglaze colours and fired. I play with materials and glazes to experiment with surface finishes. This creates individual and unique pieces.
I studied porcelain over glaze painting techniques with crafts women in Chantilly, France and this influence can be seen in my more decorative pieces.
My chosen range of media allows my freedom in the interpretation of the image. In sculpture my desire is to represent the character and mood of the subject rather than just a physical form. I love the challenge of 3D work, my roots as a veterinary surgeon give an interesting anatomical edge to my interpretation of ‘The nature of the beast’
I often exhibit my work in installation formats, painting a picture with the pieces, these ‘pictures’ have included a beach, a banquet, a garden and a bedroom. Setting a theme stimulates ideas for original pieces and then the challenge follows of how to make the idea work, that’s where the fun starts. In these ‘installations’ I regularly collaborate with poets and musicians.
