The Bright Field Series: Towards Jack Back's Cross

Penny Somerville’s art school training and subsequent teaching career was involved in the design and making of stained and decorative glass for architecture at the North Wales School of Art and Design.  She is inspired by both the luminous colours and graphic linear qualities to be found in architectural stained glass.  More recently she has been painting and making etchings.

 

Recent work has been inspired by her local rural landscape in mid Devon and the rhythms and patterns to be found in the rich farmland where she spends a lot of time walking her two Border Terriers. The changing seasons and weather conditions are a constant source of wonder as the fields light up with bright colours.   She makes drawings and photographs whilst out and about then translates these into abstracted paintings back in the studio.   

 

 

Her love of the work of Welsh poet R.S. Thomas’ poem ‘The Bright Field’ provided the title for the series
