Cheryl is a mixed media artist living and working in South Devon. She is primarily an animal and character artist mostly using the mediums of painting and printmaking, with linoprinting being her favourite method of making art. Cheryl's work is informed by both her love of the natural world and the concept of Pareidolia which is the art of perceiving meaningful images in random patterns or textures. She first came across this concept at Art College some years ago in her very first Printmaking lesson.
In this lesson the class were being taught how to make abstract monoprints using various materials to create different patterns and textures. Cheryl began to see the outlines of animals in her prints and set out to develop them further. Since then she has continued to work in this way as the “sightings” of animals, and sometimes people too, are regularly abundant. She sees them everywhere she goes – in walls, floors, ceilings, wood, rocks, in plants, at the beach, everywhere! She captures them – most often with a camera – and takes them back to her studio to bring them to life in ways that she feels most suit them.
Cheryl loves to work with ink and enjoys playing with other mediums such as pens and pencils, pastels and gold leaf, employing anything that she feels will enhance the character on the page. Her work is gently quirky and has been described, amongst other lovely things, as 'friendly' and 'heartwarming'.
