Fused Glass by Susan Purser Hope
Slip, Slip, Sliding
Susan Purser Hope
I am an artist who works with fused glass. I recently moved to Devon from Norfolk to continue my lifetime’s ambition to live by the sea and to enjoy big skies.
The pandemic has dislocated so many of us from the lives we used to live and continues to do so. During this period I have become increasingly fascinated by creating patterns out of life’s chaos – maybe a way of exerting control over uncontrollable situations.
My recent work looks at this shattering of normality. I have created my own patterned sheets of glass. I then cut and reassembled them into a collage of juxtaposed pieces that fit together – but not quite. Just as our lives will never fit together quite so snugly again.
All my work is individually designed and hand made in my Brixham studio. It highlights the beauty of glass and the way that it reflects colour, texture and light. I work with a range of glass elements in a cold state which I manipulate and assemble before firing and fusing them in a kiln. The different types of glass that I use include sheet, frits, confetti, stringers and paints.
