Pink Splash Bowl

Nikki Smith spent her career working as a professional photographer in London, taking pictures for publishing, advertising and television. Six years ago, she retired and moved to the South Hams in Devon, an area special to her and her family.

Needing a new creative outlet, Nikki had a go at ceramics and fell in love with all things clay. Hand building and throwing, then often altering her pots. She adds character to her pieces using tools, stamps and objects she finds to create texture. Colour is also important, using slips, stains, oxides and underglazes as well as glaze.

Also, a painter, she likes to draw and design on her ceramics using sgraffito techniques, transfers, stencils and hand painting. With a style that is constantly changing as she learns more, she likes to make pieces that combine many of these learnt techniques in a single piece.
