Perranporth Beach Waves
Catherine Kennedy
I am an oil painter inspired by the power of the ocean and love to bring the same energy into my seascape and wave paintings. Living in the coastal town of Teignmouth, Devon I can walk to the sea and view it’s ever-changing colours and moods. Visits to Cornwall also inspire my work, especially Perranporth, Constantine Bay.
Studying film and video art as part of my BA Fine Art course at Plymouth University has influenced my painting style. I like to bring a sense of movement and escapism in my work. For example, I want the viewer to feel they can walk across the sand or dive into the sea when looking at my paintings.
Oil on canvas is my preferred medium due to its adaptability. It is so versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result, this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also, it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture. I apply glazes to enrich the surface and revisit my paintings multiple times until satisfied with the texture and depth of colour.
