Over the Bay

My recent collection of paintings has centred around the landscape and exploring my surrounding environment in paint. Having grown up by the coast, I have always enjoyed the vast seascapes that surround the Devon and Cornish coast, juxtaposed with the weathered Moors, inspiration is always close by. 

I created these paintings by making preliminary quick sketches, either on location or from source photos then using those preliminary sketches as inspiration for my paintings. I use the information from the drawings alongside my memory and imagination to paint these atmospheric landscapes. 

I use loose washes of acrylic paint in a limited palette to build up the layers of my imagined landscapes. Gold leaf adds another dimension to the painting, interacting with the viewer as they become immersed in the seascape, then finished with watercolour pencil, adding highlights and detail, bringing the landscape to life.
