Not Stupid Enough
Ana Maria Banica
My chosen theme for my A2 Level photography course work is ‘Identity and Covid19’. I chose to combine these two topics together as I believe they both have powerful messages that link together perfectly; I want to be able to share my own experience along with other people’s through my photography.
My aim in this project is to explore how people responded to this global pandemic to send a message to society about freedom from gender stereotypes and not being judged by what you wear and where you’re from also as my topic is about “Identity”, I found inspiration in Barbara Kruger’s images. In her work she explores feminism and empowering women with an extreme ironic sense.
The text on her images talk about how women are 100% natural when the images show us as perfection by wearing tons of makeup, having the perfect body and skin, shiny hair without showing what's beneath. Her work inspires me because of the way she empowers all the young girls who feel like they need to follow ‘ideal’ standards.
As young women in today's broken society, we are viewed as objects. We are expected to hide how we really feel and present ourselves as ‘pretty’ and ‘innocent’ and men are expected to conform to societal expectations as ‘masculine’ and ‘ strong’ idealised figures.
