Having achieved a BA in ceramics, from Central School of Art & Design in London, and an MA in printmaking from UWE, Bristol, my work is focussed on where I live in Cornwall and my surroundings of estuaries, boatyards, harbours. Boatyards, docks, sea defences and shipwrecks are all influential to my work for their structural shapes, colours and weather-beaten surfaces. I like to work in a variety of disciplines, choosing the most appropriate method to suit the subject matter, but ultimately, they are united by three common ingredients - use of colour, form and textural mark-making.
In my printmaking practice I specialise in a technique called collagraph which is a versatile form of printmaking that allows for the cutting out of shapes and application of textures to a printing plate, similar to making a collage. I like to ink up the plate in a painterly way using brushes, rollers and rags which helps to emphasise the surface detail and control the areas of colour, making each print unique despite being part of an edition.
Painting has been a lifelong ambition of mine and since moving to Cornwall I have begun to explore the variety of processes connected to painting. One particular method I enjoy is working with cold wax medium combined with oil paint. This medium not only extends the paint and quickens the drying time, but also allows for the fast building up of layers, adding surface interest, and which can be scratched through to reveal the colours underneath.
