Glass by Clare Summons
Lyme Bay
Clare Summons
I grew up on a farm by the sea. Perfect! Life was inspiring. Exploring my environment, being challenged to look beyond the obvious. When working with fused, and cast glass I enjoy the challenges between form, function and leaving room for memory and imagination. My work refers to the relationship between land and sea. Exploring colour, texture and pattern through the forms found in my chosen landscapes.
I use drawings and photographs of those landscapes. From these I play with collage, paint, and a variety of other mediums to extend my ideas. Drawing upon the way that materials can influence my chosen ideas, offering new ways to work. I take these concepts into fused glass by using sheet glass, frits, powders, embossing and printing to explore the full potential of my concept. Adding another aspect of the piece comes with the making of texture plastered beds to develop the three-dimensional aspect of the work with reference to Victorian glass.
