Lilac In A Favourite Jug
Karen Popham
I trained at the Central School of Art, now Central St Martins, in London, and have painted ever since. My first One Man show was in Oxford following my fine art degree, and I was pregnant with the first of my three children. I have worked as an illustrator, muralist, and teacher. I was Artist in Residence at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, the Laban Ballet School, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, for whom I illustrated two books - the Mud Maid and the Giant.
I have exhibited widely, having had seven One Man shows - the last one being this September in the Chapel at Brompton Cemetery. I have also exhibited in public exhibitions including the Royal Academy, the Mall Galleries, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Since returning to Devon, I have become a member of SWAc and have shown work at their Open exhibitions in Sidmouth and at Delamore. I am so thrilled to now be able to work in the studio where I live in Buckfastleigh. During my life I have been interested in painting mostly still lives, interiors and buildings. I have also taught life drawing and portraiture and oil painting in general.
When I lived near Winchester, I started to paint landscapes and run plein air workshops. Now that I am living on the edge of Dartmoor, I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such a beautiful and inspiring landscape and to have the opportunity to explore and paint it!
