Yifan Li
Yifan is a Chinese artist based in Leeds. His works that span across photography, installation art, and digital image etc. His background in photography education and military service formed a proclivity for observing the world from a post-documentary perspective, and as such, he demonstrates a keen interest in contemporary social phenomena, geopolitics, the relationship between individuals and environments, and future.
He likes using cultural symbols and metaphor to discuss different topics in multiple perspectives. Yifan is studying in MA Fine Arts program at the University of Leeds.
It's your turn (2022-ongoing) comes from the artist Yifan's mind into Russia-Ukraine conflict. The project consists of works in various media including cyanotype, video and installation.
In this project, Yifan deconstructs the searing situation of the Russia-Ukrainian war from the beginning to the middle of the war, using geometric graphics to link military action to Go. The war is recreated through the Go practice of 打谱 (recovering the game from a game record to speculate on the original players’ thinking). This work uses decorative patterns carries the brutal nature of war and explores the interpretations and positions of outsiders to war.
