In the Thicket
Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan
Originally from London, Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan now resides in rural North Devon with her husband and their two beloved shaggy dogs. Creativity has always coursed through her veins; however, life steered her away from the artistic realm, leading her down a different career path. Yet, at the age of 46, Kelly resolved to pursue her long-held dream of painting.
‘As an artist I love exaggeration and find myself turning up the colour volume and enlarging features on nearly everything that I create. My paintings are always full of striking colour, and I love to apply vibrant hues with fearless strokes, embracing a daring and dynamic style.
I paint with acrylic paints and love the fluidity and consistency of the flow off of the brush, as well as the ease with which I can build multiple layers.
My paintings are joyful expressions of the natural world I see around me, and the generally large size of my canvases enhances the impact of their bold nature and colours within the environments they inhabit.’
Part of my BlossomBound series A portrait of an English hare captured in a pose evocative of classical religious iconography. Immersed in this serene stance, the hare remains unaware of its gradual absorption into the encroaching landscape—a poignant reflection of how human activities quietly consume the natural world.
