Judith Langlois
Judith’s prints are a product of many and varied experiences and environments, collected both consciously and unconsciously from her life. Growing up on a farm in northwest England – very flat, black and far from pretty – the soil, and the marks made in it by the season’s tools and machines, always fascinated her. During her sculpture degree it was the surfaces, forms and marks made by various actions that she enjoyed.
Whilst teaching art at secondary level she continued to develop a wide range of mark making techniques, and ways of creating illusions, often through the use of negative shapes and different ways of creating space and perspective.
Judith loves the beauty and inspiration she gets from the everyday – the marks and patterns seen in landscape, and also in the physical actions and materials of baking, sewing, knitting, gardening, and, occasionally, even cleaning!
Judith has always loved drawing on different surfaces - on misty windows, chalk on paving – and with various traditional and nontraditional drawing implements. A sense of play and fun is important.
Her work might appear quite diverse, but is always based on strong drawing; a wondering about “What if?”; and repetition of marks or shapes to build up a whole. She finds this exciting, yet also loves the rhythm and inner calm she feels when working in these repetitive ways. Inspired by artists who work in a very physical way, like Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, Rachel Whiteread, Anselm Kiefer………. she aims to create art work that reflects her view of the world, and hopes will connect with others.
