Mixed Media by Bel Bailey

I am fulfilling a long-held ambition to devote my time to developing my art ever since retiring from General Practice. I have been self-taught until a few years ago when I attended my first short course at at Newlyn School of Art. I have been on several courses since then and have enjoyed using mixed and various media since. I particularly enjoy oils for their luminance and endless possibilities for layering and glazing but have also enjoyed spending time developing a mixed media approach with watercolours, using white gouache in some and finishing them with Dorland's Wax for a lustrous sheen.
My paintings are mostly of seascapes and coastal landscapes, as well as of birds and marine wildlife. I live by the sea in Exmouth and have always had a deep connection with the ocean through years of escaping onto the water in my downtime, on any board or boat, as well as enjoying the invigoration that year-round sea swimming provides. I paint mostly in the studio, using reference photographs I have taken whilst out on the cliff paths with our dog, or whilst out sailing. I do also enjoy Plein Air painting, finding the different challenges of capturing changing light and atmosphere very freeing.
