Mixed Media by Keith Frake
From Black To Black
Keith Frake
My work, both in 2D and 3D is influenced by an interest in Myth, folklore and fairytales.More recently it has extended to Shamanism and Medieval Alchemy with particular reference to the process of transformation, fragility and nature.
The types of representation i use varies. I often use black bitumen, ash and white emulsion as a medium to work with.I build up the surface with layers into which I scratch into. I apply heat and flame to the surface as well as introducing solvents and acids. This process produces other colours and textures which change over time and which are very fragile.
Other pieces experiment with different processes.´ Composition for Both Handsˋ is a drawing made up of layers of black and white marks and symbols but was constructed by using both hands simultaneously. Other drawings are created with my non- dominate hand to heighten focus and quality of line etc.
In other work certain archetypes, symbols, images appear in different forms.Mountains, trees, ladders, angels and other motifs from Shamanism and Alchemy find themselves as central iconography trying to reveal an unconscious narrative and layers of meaning.Mixed Media Including Corrosive Materials Non-Glazed.
