David Jones
David Jones was born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent, home of the ceramics industry – better known as ‘The Potteries’. With various family members working in the industry, David was introduced to the world of ceramics and design from a very young age. He recalls helping out during school holidays with work in the ceramic factories and being told, you knew the job before you left school up in Stoke, duck!’
On leaving school at 16, David joined Josiah Wedgewood at Barlaston to undertake a comprehensive 5-year training programme in model making and sculpting working in many of their factories as part of that training. In 1991 he moved on to work for a Ceramic Design Company which supported many world-renowned ceramic companies – Josiah Wedgewood, Royal Doulton, Steelite International, Lenox China, Belleek – working in design, prototypes, moulds and much more as the industry technically progressed.
David was offered a job in Devon in 1997 and decided to take up the offer, ‘green lands of Devon or a council estate? Nothing wrong with a council estate though, but it was time for a change’. Here he has continued to work in design, model making and creative development with his many years of experience expanding and enriching his skill set, creating for designers, architects and companies, putting their ideas into a working reality.
In between work David continues to explore his own creative practice developing his own ideas and interests based on his love of the coast here and his love of fishing.
‘ May all your hands be full of clay and your heart’s be full of imagination.’
