Art and textiles were a huge part of my early life in suburban London, but after swerving unexpectedly into the world of law at 17, followed by going to university at 21 to study social housing, my creative side has been consigned to enjoying evening and weekend art courses for the last three decades.
However, a move from south London to Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds in 2017 - home of CR Ashbee’s Guild of Craftsmen in the early 1900s - placed me in the perfect location to engage with artists and creatives. For the last year I’ve been producing, and most recently exhibiting and selling, my own work.
For me Collage is the perfect medium for examining the natural world, enabling me to visually break down colours and textures into component parts and then, using hand torn recycled papers, assemble the puzzle into the final work.
I find a mental tranquillity in the concentration required; also a subversive humour since I often use mundane, household images as well as food portraits and transform them into mini oeuvres.Collage suits my skills - curiosity - what’s in front of me? how can this piece be formed in paper? an interest in colour and texture; and it is also suitable for the confines of our small cottage rather than the art studio I yearn for!
This rather plump beauty ended up on my plate; but before that her glinting colours intrigued me.
