Textiles (Hand Embroidery) by Emma Yeomans

Emma Yeomans
I split my life between my job as a news reporter, and my art. I work in contemporary hand embroidery with a focus on landscape. My art is informed by my day job as a news reporter; the rhythm of embroidery is catharsis from some of the intense and challenging situations reporting takes me into, while the places I see in my work provide inspiration for embroidery. Reporting can take me all around the world and it teaches me to see the beauty in unlikely places. I am based currently in London but grew up in Lewes, East Sussex and started my career in Brighton.
All of my pieces use reclaimed textiles as the base fabric, to keep my practice as sustainable as possible, then silk-cotton threads on top, and sometimes watercolour paint or natural dyes to achieve my desired tones. Finished pieces are mounted on wood before framing.
I’ve previously exhibited at galleries in London, Sussex, and Derbyshire. I particularly love working with small or rural galleries, unusual venues and social enterprises.
Cloud cover obscures Skiddaw in the Lake District, giving each gully and slope its own shade of green.
