Kiln Formed Glass by Shirley Eccles
Blue Harlequin
Shirley Eccles
Shirley Eccles has a passion for Glass having come from a Fine Art and Ceramic background. She has developed her conceptual ideas alongside her technical skills and is inspired by the fragility and refractive qualities of glass. Her work moves between decorative and conceptual, making use of a variety of kiln formed and lost wax casting techniques
This piece is one of a body of work that was developed in the wake of isolation when I had the time and opportunity to design and developing my glass art.
Each sheet of glass is individually created using the technique of inlay work. It is very time consuming and intricate and demands multiple firings. During the final drop out firing process you have no control of how it will stretch and distort. I find this unknown element challenging, yet very exciting as it is a fine line between order and chaos, success and failure. And it is this challenge of the unknown that keeps me fascinated and intrigued by glass, always with the urge to keep exploring new possibilities.
