Black Tie: What Well-Dressed Vessels are Wearing*
Susan Sinclair
I have always been fascinated by colour and how it can express and affect mood. I began working with glass in 2009 for the range of colours it afforded and because glass connects me with our history, having been used for personal and architectural adornment for over a thousand years.
My background in archaeology and interest in the natural world are often evident in my art. Much of my work is comprised of what are considered “functional objects”, such as vessels or bowls, even if they are not truly functional. I am always thrilled when someone looks at one of my creations and sees something special with which they can connect.
I predominantly use opaque glass for greater colour saturation, often blending glass powders for custom effects. I create gravity vessels from sheet glass, and also pâte de verre vessels, as well as creating sintered powder wafers in organic shapes, combining these to create a textured surface. All my work is kiln-formed.
One of a pair of vessels made of sheet glass enhanced with silver and dichroic pieces to create a glitzy finish.
