I work full time at my art, other than day care of a second child who is now two! I gave up a better paying job in surveying to go back to the thing `I loved. I work mostly in ink and watercolours out of familiarity and just the joy I get from drawing. `I prefer to leave swathes of my composition unpainted, carefully considering which parts need focus and which parts are just surplus detail.
I love watercolour for the reason many artists hate it, it can run wild and letting it do its thing is where the fun and magic is at. This makes a nice counter balance to my detailed linework; it goes from controlled to loose as the watercolour brings the drawing to life.
In recent months I've found myself putting away my reference photos in favour of abstracting the colours. My recent browser pieces reflect this better. If I was to describe my style it would be 'ink landscape sketching with a splash of vibrant abstracted colour'. That is the aim at least.
The subjects I paint are always a scene I've seen and loved, the bulk of my work being landscapes of the South West, Devon and Cornwall. I have a particular love of St Ives, having been going there as a child since 1975! The sea features in much of my work, but I prefer to focus my attention on the architecture, the human elements.
My future plans for my art would be to push more into abstraction, especially in colours and add another medium into the mix, most likely adding pastels for their vibrancy of colour.
I paint for myself and the love of doing so, but I always have in mind that someone may want to put it in a frame and hang it on their wall, what would the final owner like to see?
My work is non academic, there is no message per se, its created for the joy of drawing and painting something beautiful, there's enough dark in the world, mine is intended as a splash of joy and colour.
