As a painter I pursue something akin to David Bomberg’s doctrine of searching for the ‘Spirit in the Mass’, looking at the world and attempting to produce ‘equivalents’ .
My interest lies in how we see, and how our seeing can translate form into painterly substance, and how that substance can have a direct impact on our nervous systems. I plan ahead by drawing, looking for geometries, mathematical sightlines, planes, mass, multiple viewpoints, though none of these approaches may be evident the final painting, which relies on an informed intuitiveness that steers clear of illustration. This means that many works are destroyed en route to an acceptable end, and this end might bear little resemblance to the original inspiration.
