Against The Light
Simon Ashby SWAc
I began painting in 2002 and found I was drawn to painting outside on location, a genre known as plein air. My preferred medium has tended to be acrylics; though I have lately returned to the use of oils and watercolours.
I work within a two-hour time frame to try and capture a scene that changes constantly with the weather. The moving light and shadow is a real challenge but worth it - I think the final result offers a really loose and interesting picture.
Though my base in Devon provides a great deal of inspiration, I love travelling to paint. France in particular has provided a great range of scenery that pushes me to keep developing my painting technique and scope.
In 2018 I was delighted to be elected an Academician of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
