“For me, it’s always been first and foremost about colour. I’m obsessed with colour! That’s really what first drew me to working in glass – being able to create truly vibrant pieces. Using enamel powders in particular gives me the scope to create shade and texture within the colours – the possibilities are infinite – which is why I’ve chosen to specialise in enamel techniques throughout my career.
2022 marks my 20th year working as a full-time glass artist and I have recently been reflecting on what I most enjoy creating, and revisiting some of my very earliest designs.
My sketch books are full of ideas, many of which haven’t yet made it into glass and are just begging to be played with! One of the joys of glasswork is never running out of new processes to try and achieving new effects.
The natural world is a wonderful source of inspiration to me – and my real love is the ocean. Sensuous, flowing forms have always appealed, and I like creating semi-abstract impressions taken from marine life – such as the octopus, fish and mini shell-form bowls".
This piece is from the Moorland series, and include my interpretation of the Tors, where I have used a ‘mosaic’ style to represent the interlocking rock forms. I individually cut, shape and colour each piece, adding extra texture with my flatbed diamond grinder, and then reassemble them a bit like a jigsaw. Also in this series are tree and fern designs, featuring the new metallic effects I have been introducing into my work – adding silver, copper and gold elements which change as you light the glass and view it from different angles.
