Artizan Collective is pleased to support the Ambassador Theatre Group and Arts & Heritage in the delivery of an exciting artist commission to be intalled at Torbay's Princess Theatre. Funded by COVID relief investment from Arts Council England, the opportunity seeks an artist that will celebrate the Theatre's heritage and place at the heart of the cultural landscape in Torbay.
The Commission
Princess Theatre sits in a prominent position within Torquay, built as the main feature of the redevelopment of the Princess Gardens back in 1961 it opened to host the greatest entertainers of the time - the opening night featuring Tommy Cooper and Morecambe and Wise and including The Beatles in its long list of entertainers performing there.
Though the programme has now changed to reflect the needs of contemporary audiences– the building still sits at the heart of Torquay, looking over Tor Bay to spectacular scenery, sunsets and views of the harbour.
This commission is an opportunity for an artist to delve into the theatre’s history, engage with its communities and staff and extract the stories contained within its walls. It also presents an expanded opportunity for an artist to explore Torquay’s heritage. From its coastal history, including possible themes of the bay’s shift from fishing to fashionable seaside resort, to Torquay’s unique natural environment and climate, or the history of Princess Theatre and its unique views; from Bay to Stage. The venue wants to be as open as possible about the themes and imagery an artist would like to explore.
The commission is being planned for the walls, windows and/ or stairwell of the café bar/ restaurant. This could be on one of these or be throughout the spaces.
