Gill Melling - Geopark Artist Residency - In the Studio and on Location.

Over the last 2 weeks I have been busy cracking on with work and both holding and taking part in events.

I have hung my net and chain piece for the first time after much shoulder aching drilling into the ceiling. I can now take it in and ponder what needs changing, adding, taking away etc. I find pieces can only evolve in a process of feedback loops; to make, to respond, to make, to respond.

Finished my tiny Moses basket and sat it on a cradle of chip forks with feet in the sand.

I took part in a beach clean with @torbaycleanercoasts at St Mary's Bay and Jess found this nurse hound Catshark egg casing. What a beautiful thing.

Some other interesting shapes and textures of what is essentially litter that we found.

Great to meet new people on the beach clean and to talk to them, about my project. Look out for their next one in October.

Having spent 2 hours sewing a pillow for my cuttlefish I decided it was too big so had to unpick it. Sometimes you have to follow your gut, take a deep breath and be brave enough to undo what you have just done as you know it's the right thing to do. Hey ho!

Thank you to everyone who came to meet me on Thursday the 26th September to find out about my project. It was really valuable to talk through my ideas and get feedback.

I made a seahorse paper chain using fish and chip paper. I was talking to Neil from @seahorsetrust about the nature of clinging on. How sea creatures cling on to seagrass and how humanity is clinging on. It seems like a theme. I've also been exploring the idea of chains, so it seemed relevant to bring the ideas together in the form of a paper chain. I love the shadows it creates and these are an important part of it.

I found Neptune's trident! Well not really but great contrast of colours. Loads of seagrass torn up and dumped on the beach from the rough season and easterly winds but @rachlouall and I also got a close up look at living seagrass exposed at low tide. Yes we are a bit obsessed with seagrass! No swimming though as it was too windy, cold and murky

. A massive thank you to everyone who joined in with my "In conversation" this morning. It was such a rich and valuable discussion which led us in lots of fascinating and poignant directions. It really helped me evaluate my work, and find connections with your own creative thinking. It'd be great to keep in touch. I'll be putting the audio of the conversation on the Artizan Gallery website soon.

Final week of my studio residency @artizangallery. I decided to make the seahorses more precarious by tearing their tethers. Also continuing to experiment with ink and chip paper trying to highlight the grease marks which create absences. I'm impatient though and keep fiddling instead of letting it dry!
