Diverse Practice

Regular visitors to our gallery on Fleet Street will know that below the main gallery space we have a series of studio spaces where we are supporting local artists to develop their creative practice.

This includes Ian Cox SWAc, printmaker who has been with us almost from the start. When Ian first took up a studio space, he was working primarily with linocut’s but having a large studio space has enabled him to pursue other printmaking practices and art forms.

Ian has had several solo shows with us and regularly takes part in our open exhibitions but has also shown his work further afield participating in a number of print festivals across the UK, including Woolwich Print Fair in London where he recently attended and delivered a demonstration on mezzotint printmaking. He is the recipient of several awards for his practice. Ian also provides mentoring support for other artists from his studio.

Olya Baklan works in watercolours and joined us last year. Originally from the Crimea she has now been in the UK for several years. Like Ian she is a regular exhibitor in our open exhibitions but has also exhibited widely, including with the Chelsea Arts Society in London. Olya also delivers workshops in watercolour techniques from the studio.

Hannah Taylor also took up her studio space with us last year. She is an artist, potter & garden flowers florist creating unique, hand-painted stoneware vases. Each individually hand thrown vase is crafted to be a one-of-a-kind work of art, with unique shapes and sizes achieved through experimentation.

Cheryll Kinsley Potter is the most recent artist to join us. She is a graduate of St Martin’s School of Art and has painted all her life. Working primarily in oils, Cheryll’s work is varied and, in her words, ‘often mistaken for the creations of multiple artists’. Her landscapes, usually featuring trees and their shadows are postcards or diary pieces recording her movements, country to country. Iconography is a later adventure and after 20 years of rigid adherence to the process she has started incorporating her love of portraiture with the spirituality of the icon.

During the exhibition artist will be delivering workshops and demonstrations.

We have two remaining studio spaces available and welcome approaches from artists looking to develop their creative practice.
