Caroline Barker
I have been printmaking for 18 years now, making both intaglio and relief prints. I particularly enjoy designing linocuts and then carving them. It’s an addictive process and full of surprises. I have my own press and do a lot of my preparatory work at home and join with Pressgang printmakers working in the Loft Studio, in Salcombe during the winter. My work focuses on the local landscape of Devon and the creatures and plants that inhabit it. I hope that my prints help jog the memories of familiar places. Apart from having had work at RWA, Bristol, Topsham, and Tore Abbey, I also regularly take part in various exhibitions at Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Totnes and Dartington. I also make small handmade books; some are pop-ups, and all have linocut illustrations and have written quotes in calligraphy. I exhibited my books at BABE at The Arnolfini in Bristol in 2015 and in March 2019. I have had some of my cards selling at Tate Britain and am thrilled that I have my prints in 6 books by Alan Marshall showing work of British printmakers. The most recent book is called “Beauty of the Beast” in which I have 6 of my mammal prints. I have recently been commissioned to produce 2 book covers for Candlestick press and a print of Plymouth for 45, Southside on the Barbican.
