English Riviera Summer Open 2022
Our Summer Open is now a well-established event on our annual calendar having originally started purely by chance several years ago. Each year the event sees us build on previous shows as we welcome old and new artists to Torbay for our personal homage to the great institution that is the Royal Academy Summer Show. Starting in the last week of June, the show will take us through the whole of July and into August for a 6 week show and promises to be as rich and diverse as in previous years.

Adriana Banari
I am a Romanian/Moldavian national, with a degree in journalism and a diploma in music, living in Exeter, UK. As a collage artist, I have worked extensively with digital and mixed media, including paint and paper, and use digital editing suites, such as Photoshop. I have exhibited my collages in M.A.D.S Art Gallery in Milano, in Powderham Castle and in my hometown’s museums in Chisinau. I am also proud of the short video-poems I’ve acted in, written and produced: “Eu nu strivesc corola de minuni a lumii” (I do not crush the world’s corolla full of wonders) and “Chemarea Mamei”(The call of my mother), which is a video I created for a poem I wrote in my mother’s memory, both available on YouTube. In addition, I have written and performed piano pieces; one that I really like it’s a lullaby called ‘Papilio’ and is also available on Youtube. Last but not least, I have created a stop motion animation video, using collage and mixed media elements, which has now been used in a music video. Growing up in Moldova and subsequently moving to the UK, I have developed a greater appreciation for the role of culture and context in art, as well as the role of art in connecting people. My father, who is a music teacher, taught me to play the piano, accordion and guitar form a young age. He always told me, “One eye sees, the other feels”. Reflecting on this idea, I have tried to remain mindful of the analytical and emotional sides of the creativity. This statement still echoes in my mind every time I create something and, more generally, it has influenced my outlook in life. Through my upbringing and study of music, I’ve come to understand that everything has a rhythm; it’s really important for me to keep this in mind when I’m writing a poem or song, or making a painting, sculpture or collage. The prospect of being part of an artistic community, where I can explore and experiment with processes and ideas with like-minded individuals, lifts my spirit.
