Intricate Relationships
Zidi Gong is a contemporary artist working with ceramics, metal, and glass. Her practice examines the intricate relationships between humans and nature, focusing on humanity’s impact on ecosystems and our often contradictory perceptions of the natural world. As Zidi notes, “There often lies a conflict and opposition between nature in its essence and our perception of it—beautiful/ugly, cute/cruel... These contradictions invariably permeate human society, giving rise to new issues.”
Her Cute or Cruel? series explores these themes by focusing on species such as pufferfish, porcupines, and armadillos. While their defense mechanisms are vital for survival, humans often perceive them as "cute," masking the underlying fear and struggle these creatures endure. Using handbuilt ceramic techniques, Zidi creates fragmented, textured sculptures that deconstruct these animals’ forms, challenging anthropocentric views and advocating for a more harmonious coexistence with nature.
