Urban and Metropolitan Landscape
All of my work evolves from experiences of visiting towns and cities of Europe (including the UK). My interest lies in architectural structures and spaces, both ancient and contemporary. Through the processes of looking and making drawn studies and recordings of my subject matter, in conjunction with taking photographs, I return to the studio to deconstruct my source materials and re construct my ideas with the intention of establishing on canvas, the essence of a place, evoking residual memories and sensations.
Much of what transpires happens directly on the canvas, with intermittent scribbles in sketchbooks. This is invariably a long and time-consuming way of working with much restating as the painting emerges. The primary criteria for potential completion is that it must express and convey the intrinsic nature of the place and my own lasting, fragmented memories.
