Explorations in Texture and Pattern

Elizabeth Murphy (b. 1979) is a ceramic artist based in Oxfordshire whose practice is based around exploring narratives woven with threads of history, literature, music, nature and the human condition.

Starting with a thrown vessel, the forms are often combined into assemblages which create sculptural totemic forms. These vessels become the backdrop for explorations in applied texture and surface pattern. Working intuitively and expressionistically, there is a gestural and woven quality to the texture which is inspired by an interest in the meandering line, natural forms, and textiles. The surface decoration forms a framework upon which complex glaze studies are composed with layered tones that give a sense of depth and movement. Every work is a unique investigation which invites you to look deeper and discover new details every time you view it.
