Dramatic Contrasts
Anne Smith creates ceramics that serve as canvases for abstract designs inspired by nature, landscapes, and her travels. Working primarily with stoneware clays of contrasting textures and colours, she combines these with rich green and blue glazes, creating dramatic contrasts with unglazed surfaces. Her pieces often evoke botanical themes, with layered underglazes and glazes reflecting the striking patterns of elements such as Madagascan tree bark or iconic landscapes.
In addition to her glazed works, Anne produces smoke-fired and raku pieces, embracing the unpredictability of these processes to achieve unique and dynamic results. Whether through intricate layering or the spontaneity of smoke and fire, her ceramics celebrate the interplay of memory, nature, and craftsmanship.
